Purchase Advice

Where to Start...

More and more men begin shopping by first researching online and then visiting a local jeweler. For a platinum retailer in your area, call the Platinum Concierge at 800-207-PLAT for recommendations. What is Her Ring Size?

If you have no idea and don't want to ask, try one of these methods. A jeweler can calculate her ring size from any of them.

Trace the inside of one of her rings onto paper
Borrow one of her rings
Put one of her rings on your finger and mark where it rests with a pen

What is Your Budget?

OK, here's the big question. How much are you prepared to spend? The general rule of thumb is two month's of your current salary (see chart). But ultimately, any budget will depend on what works for you and what ring she loves. Having a set figure in mind does put you in much better control of your options.

ANNUAL INCOME SPENDING ESTIMATES
$30,000 $5,000
$40,000 $6,667
$50,000 $8,333
$60,000 $10,000
$70,000 $11,667
$80,000 $13,333

In the Store...

Buying an engagement ring is a lot like buying a car. Ask questions. Take a test drive by handling and examining the rings. With platinum, you can actually feel its difference. The physical density of platinum gives it substance and a luxurious weight that denotes quality.

If your salesperson’s a woman, have her model it. If you want technical information on specific metals or certified diamonds, speak with a Graduate Gemologist (there’s usually a certificate on display telling you if the store has one).

Since some salespeople believe you’ll only be interested in a gold setting, research shows that almost half of all male shoppers have to bring up platinum themselves. If platinum is your preferred metal, continue shopping until you find a retailer that helps you understand the differences in metals, offers a good selection, and understands and values each metal for its inherent characteristics.

Financing and Warranties

Most retailers offer financing. Find out before you've settled on a ring. Otherwise, you can investigate specific loans for wedding and jewelry purchases offered by banks or credit unions. The jeweler you are working with should provide you with a warranty that the ring will maintain its shape and is free from any manufacturing defects. For all engagement rings, it is advised to have the ring cleaned by a professional jeweler at least once a year.

SOME HELPFUL TIPS

The diamond represents the majority of the ring's cost. The larger and finer the diamond, the less difference it makes whether the setting is platinum or gold. With diamonds one-carat or larger, the price difference between the same setting in platinum or 18-carat white gold should be less than 10%.

Size, brilliance, and number of gemstones directly affect cost.

Unlike the cost of flowers or a reception, an engagement ring and wedding bands are the only wedding-related purchases with long-term investment value.

Because platinum is usually 90 – 95% pure, you get more precious metal for your money, making it a better value.
